Lambert Homer, Sr. (1917-1972), R. Romancito (?)

Widely recognized and respected artist, Lambert Homer Sr. often collaborated with other artists who worked with trader C. G. Wallace. Not much is known about the other artist, whose name is also on the ribbon. Lambert is perhaps best known for pieces featuring intricate mosaic and channel inlay work. R. Romancito possibly did the silver work? These two men created this unique piece, that caught the eye of the judges.

This wonderful vintage buckle depicts the horned or plumed serpent Avanyu, an important deity amongst the Pueblos. Symbolic both of earthly and supernatural phenomena, lightning, clouds, rain, bodies of water and the fusion of the terrestrial to the heavenly. Often called upon during severe drought. The serpent is inlaid with natural turquoise, red Mediterranean coral, black jet, clam shell and mother of pearl.
