Description

The heavy silver is beautifully worked, hand hammered with very deep repousse. 5 silver buttons grace one side of the guard. It appears 2 buttons are missing. This early ketoh features a very pretty Natural Blue Gem turquoise stone that is surrounded with a heavy silver bezel. The classic ketoh was originally created by the Navajo as a form of wrist protection for hunter. It would guard the lower arm from being hit by the bowstring once the arrow was released. This aged bow guard is in good condition with some of the leather. An inside leather strap has come loose on one side. Easily repaired. A wonderful deep patina graces the entire piece.

It looks to be the original heavy saddle leather band with strap. The leather portion of the piece measures 3 3/4" wide x 9 1/2" long, with the silver guard measuring 3 3/4" by 3 1/4", including the slight curved sides. The Blue Gem stone measures 5/8" by 5/8". Bow guards are now worn by both men and women as bracelets.
