Description

Paul Saufkie (18981993) is considered the creator and main teacher in the development of Hopi overlay jewelry. He learned silversmithing from his father in the 1920s, and after World War II taught returning veterans in a program sponsored by the G. I. Bill of Rights. Mr. Saufkie and renowned painter Fred Kabotie helped create the Hopi Silvercraft Cooperative Guild in 1949, which offered training, materials, financing, work space and marketing for Hopi silversmiths. Saufkie's influence helped give Hopi jewelry a distinct identity. His jewelry is hard to come by as he did not produce many pieces after the 1950's.

This wonderful bracelet is simple elegance, with a beautiful patina and horned or plumed serpent, Avanyu design. Avanyu is an important deity amongst the Pueblos. Symbolic both of earthly and supernatural phenomena, lightning, clouds, rain, bodies of water and the fusion of the terrestrial to the heavenly. Often called upon during severe drought.

It measures 5/8" wide. Inside measures 5 1/4" with a 1" opening. Slightly adjustable. Hallmarked with his Snow Cloud.
