Description

Paul Saufkie (1898–1993) is considered the creator and main teacher in the development of Hopi overlay jewelry. He learned silversmithing from his father in the 1920’s, and after World War II taught returning veterans in a program sponsored by the G. I. Bill of Rights. Mr. Saufkie and renowned painter Fred Kabotie helped create the Hopi Silvercraft Cooperative Guild in 1949, which offered training, materials, financing, work space and marketing for Hopi silversmiths. Saufkie's influence helped give Hopi jewelry a distinct identity. His jewelry is hard to come by as he did not produce many pieces after the 1950's.

This wonderful buckle is simple elegance, with a beautiful patina and design. It measures 3" long by 2" wide. Hallmarked with his Snow Cloud. It will accommodate a 1 5/8" belt.
