Description

This lovely all silver butterfly pin is hand crafted Navajo work from an earlier era. Beautiful stamping graces the entire piece, with the use of heavy silver for both the wings and the body. Butterfly's were one of the most desired designs in the early tourist trade during the 1940's into the 50's. Also the wearing of pins, was a very common practice for displaying a persons jewelry and wealth. Not hallmarked, which was common during this time period.

This great piece comes from the family/collection of long time trader Charles Newcomb. Mr. Newcomb was the second owner of the established 1926 trading post, Casa del Navajo in Coolidge, NM. Mr. Newcomb employed Navajo craftspeople to make their creations at the post for tourists and visitors.
Mr. Newcomb began trading at the beginning of the 1900's as a clerk at the Guam Lumber and Trading co. near Old Coolidge.

The pin measures 3" long by 2 3/8" wide. We offer a pin/pendant, silver conversion piece for all of our pins on request.
