Description

This lovely Kewa 3 strand necklace features graduated, Salmon Mediterranean coral barrel beads. The strands of this stunning necklace are 32", 31 1/2" and 31" total length. The bottom, center beads are approx. 8-9 mm. The color is just beautiful!

This style of beadwork is thought to be the oldest form of jewelry from New Mexico and is still practiced today mostly among Native Americans of the Santo Domingo (Kewa) and San Felipe Pueblos. Coral was often used in the early trade with the coastal tribes. It predates the metalworking and lapidary techniques practiced by the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni, which were introduced by Europeans.
