In the mid-1900’s Lloyd Kiva New (Cherokee 1916-2002) played an important role in revolutionizing Native clothing and accessories, such as purses. New worked with other Native artists, such as Loloma, Kenneth Begay and others and incorporated their silversmithing talents with his own creations. This is the first one we've seen with a Zuni made ornament. Which could have been by the request of the owner/purchaser. He made many custom designed purses for individuals and their names were often included on his label.

This wonderful soft (suede like) leather purse is perfectly designed for the beautiful Zuni inlaid knifewing. It is inlaid with turquoise and set in a black jet background, with a lovely silver designed frame. The tips of the leather straps/handles have hand crafted silver bolo style tips as a special added design. Lloyd would place the Brooch on the purse and then finish the closing of the leather, making it a permanent design for that purse. It is in very good condition!

The purse measures 8 1/2" long by 6" top to 8" wide at bottom. The straps are 6" long. The Zuni knifewing is 2" by 2". The golden label has, Styled for Clanette S Stapley, by Lloyd Kiva New.
