Description

Kenneth Begay (1913–1977) was called the "father of modern Navajo jewelry" for his clean, creative modern designs. His career was rooted in traditional design and technique, but evolved to new more stylistic design. In the mid-1900’s Lloyd Kiva New (1916-2002) played an important role in revolutionizing Native clothing design and accessories, such as purses. New worked with other Native artists, such as Loloma and Kenneth Begay and incorporated their silversmithing talents with his own creations.

This wonderful black wool and silk purse is perfectly designed for the amazing silver handle and brooch crafted by Navajo artist Kenneth Begay. The purse has a front zipper, inside pocket with mirror and 2 small side/front hooks. The precise stamp work of small flowers frame the outer edges and very fine straight lines are the center focus on both pieces. Amazingly comfortable to hold or drape on the arm, this beautiful combination is an eye catcher.

The purse measures (folded over), 14 ½” long by 9” wide at bottom. The silver handle measures 9” long by 5” wide and the brooch measures 5” long by 2 ¾” wide. The purse does not have a Label, so we are attributing the purse to Lloyd Kiva New, as the workmanship is amazing and the design is very similar to others by New. The silver handle is hallmarked with KB, HAND MADE, White Hogan mark and sterling.
