Description

The most renowned fetish carvers are the Zuni, who call themselves Asiwi (Ah-she-wee). Traditionally, Zuni fetishes are small carvings made from various materials by the Zuni Indians. These carvings serve a ceremonial purpose for their creators and depict animals and icons integral to their culture. As a form of contemporary Native American art, they are sold with non-religious intentions to collectors worldwide.

This wonderful little frog was carved by Rosalia Quam, who was the step daughter of George Cheechee Haloo and wife of Andrew Emerson Quam. She was a well-known and respected carver. The frog measures 1 1/2" long by 7/8" wide. The material used is a very colorful green/yellow serpentine. Her work and story is found in the newest publication, Zuni Fetish Carvers of the 1970's, by Kent and Laurie Mc Manis.
