Description

Non-native. This unique bolo features a beautiful yellow/orange walrus tusk, with inlaid black jade. The artist was Rex Foster from Comfort, Texas.

"My path has led me to borrow from the ancients. The first amulets and extra attire of humans were probably made from bones. Crafting and wearing bone is a very special way of connecting with the 'Great Mystery.' Over the years, I added to my designs using materials such as ancient walrus and woolly mammoth tusks. I feel I am merely fixing these pieces so others can carry them around with them before the pieces return to dust, as we all ultimately must." –Rex Foster.

As a beloved Texas singer-songwriter since the 1960’s, Rex started carving bone into hat bands and other adornments for himself and his musician friends. Eventually he learned silversmithing, and he became known for his singular jewelry made with fossilized walrus and mammoth tusk. Rex grew up in and resided in Comfort, Texas until his passing in October 2022.

Heavy silver bezel frames the stones for a perfect display of this unique fossil. The silver tips were hand fabricated and hold white bone cylinders. A unique and special bolo! The bolo has is etched hallmark R X F.

It measures 2 5/8" tall by 1 3/4" wide, with silver/bone 1 3/4" mid tips. The total length is 46" long.

This bolo is one of many collected over years by a Physician/professor that wore his bolos every day to his classroom and lectures. Many have small stickers showing the date he wore them and in what class he was teaching. It's an honor to share some of his special bolos with others.
