This beautifully detailed Shalako pin/pendant was crafted by well-known Zuni artist Leo Poblano,(Zuni, 1905-1959).
Set with turquoise, Mediterranean coral, jet, Mother of Pearl
and abalone shell, this amazing figure offers the best of Leo's work.
The distinct mosaic design was thought to have been revived by Leo
Poblano and Teddy Weahkee by the 1930 and possibly earlier, with figures
depicting Shalako Dancers, Knifewings, and Rainbow Gods.
This
piece also has a C.G. Wallace code etched onto the back, which dates it
to the early 40's. The code is difficult to see in the picture, as the
aged patina on this piece is very rainbow-ed and dark. The piece was
crafted with 2 small silver tubes for placement on a Walnut stand which
has a lovely Navajo silver naja on the front.
The pin measures
4 7/8" tall by 1 3/4 " wide. The stand measures 6" long by 3" deep by 2
3/4" tall. Leo did not use a hallmark, but this lovely Shalako is
definitely the work of Leo Poblano, with strong provenance. Please see
