Description

This lovely Juanita Coriz, Kewa 3 strand necklace features graduated, turquoise heishi beads with a beautiful double jacla. It comes with a first place ribbon, dated 1979. The strands of this stunning necklace are 24",with the addition of the 5" long jaclas. 29" total length. A silver link chain extension for length adjustment. There is her etched signature on the inside of the center turquoise corns.

This style of beadwork is thought to be the oldest form of jewelry from New Mexico and is still practiced today mostly among Native Americans of the Santo Domingo (Kewa) and San Felipe Pueblos. Coral was often used in the early trade with the coastal tribes. It predates the metalworking and lapidary techniques practiced by the Navajo, Hopi and Zuni, which were introduced by Europeans.
